1. Learn any OOP based language. this is most important. 2. Learn Selenium. 3. Learn CI tools like GIT, Maven and jenkins.

What I would suggest is to get used to RPA tools which will give you an edge in the current market and record some scripts and then start learning any other language with OOPS concepts such as Selenium Java or C#.

For instance , you want to automate a standalone application thus you need a tool like AutoIT , if you want to automate a web application you have to choose selenium (I am talking about only open source GPL licences ) , If you want to automate a webservices you need axis tool stubs for soap or http clients for rest . My point is you have to be very clear on what you need to automate , for a complete automation engineer you should be able to automate everything. read less
