IELTS and TOEFL, both test your English language ability in four basic language skills known as LSRW skills. LSRW stands for listening, speaking, reading, writing. TOEFL scores are accepted for admission into the US and Canadian universities only. Whereas IELTS is necessary not only for admission into universities in countries such as Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand but also for immigration purposes in those countries. There are two types of tests in IELTS, Academic Module and General Module. While Academic Module is meant for admission into universities, the General Module is meant for immigration purposes. Though there is not much difference, relatively, the General Module is little easier. Of course, the candidates who get through Academic Module can be considered for immigration purposes. "Which is better....?" depends on your purpose but both tests are equally tough or easy----again depending on your ability.
