Hi, I'm a guitarist and want to learn vocals. Which one should I go with? Is it western, Indian ,Carnatic? And what is the difference between them?

I presume when you qualify yourself as Guitarist, you already have some idea about western notations. However, that system has certain limitation although falling under 'classical'. Hindustani system is however quite extensive and thoroughly detailed out. at the same time its quite easy to comprehend... ...more

I presume when you qualify yourself as Guitarist, you already have some idea about western notations. However, that system has certain limitation although falling under 'classical'. Hindustani system is however quite extensive and thoroughly detailed out. at the same time its quite easy to comprehend just as western classical. It is complete musicology and once tou learn hindustani you know where other systems stand compared to it. 

I would suggest (not only you but ....) every student of music to learn Hindustani. for you it would be double advantage.

Subject them to some kind of music - classical, semi, bhajan gazal or even western classics. But make sure they are listening to good performers and not average ones. It shall let you guage their interest. harmonium or moderate keyboard is good to start. If they are interest in rhythm then Tabla/bongo... ...more
