A covalent bond is a bond that is formed between the atoms through sharing of electrons.
Carbon, since it has four valence shell (outermost shell electrons), can neither lose electrons ( due to the large energy required to remove out 4 electrons) nor gain 4 electrons ( as 6 protons will not be able to hold 10 electrons total). Therefore carbon attains its noble gas configuration by sharing electrons from other atoms.
And due to this property of sharing 4 electrons, it can share its electrons with four different atoms (including C-C bond, Catenation property). Thus carbon has many different combined forms in an environment, which are very useful in various fields.
