For a basic level acquaintance of Kannada language a month or two is sufficient enough provided you live and interact among Kannadigas or Kannada speaking people. You will need a Kannada speaking mentor or ideally a family who shall guide you in day to day speaking. This, along with a language dictionary, shall be of great help.

The use of whiteboard depends on the subject or topic you are teaching. For subjects like mathematics, whiteboard might seem inevitable or comfortable. Also, in case an instant doubt while teaching needs to be clarified, then whiteboard might seem very helpful. But ppt and animations are more exciting and appealing for the students. So the solution would be to use ppt and conduct a session and then keep Q&A time where you use a whiteboard to revise or explain doubts if any that the student might have noted down.
