In this chapter, you will study about Acids, Bases and Salts in detail. Have you ever
wondered why different things taste differently? Why vinegar tastes sour and why
watermelon tastes sweet? This is because of their chemical composition in the form of
acids, bases and salts.
Acid is a substance that is sour in nature and changes the colour of blue litmus to red.
Base is a substance that is bitter in taste and changes the colour of the red litmus to
blue. You must be wondering what is litmus? Litmus is a natural indicator like turmeric.
Whereas, salt is a neutral substance which is not affected by the litmus test. All these
three substances– acids, bases and salts are termed as ‘Electrolytes’.
An in-depth study of NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Science, Chapter 2 is important to
learn how acids, bases and salts react with air, water and metals.
2.1 Understanding the Chemical Properties of Acids and Bases
2.1.1 Acids and Bases in the Laboratory
2.1.2 How do Acids and Bases React with Metals?
2.1.3 How do Metal Carbonates and Metal hydrogen carbonates react with acids?
2.1.4 How to Acids and Bases react with each other?
2.1.5 Reaction of Metallic Oxides with Acids
2.1.6 Reaction of a Non-Metallic oxide with Base
2.2 What do all Acids and all Bases have in common?
2.2.1 What happens to an Acid or a Base in a water solution?
2.3 How strong are Acid or Base solutions?
2.3.1 Importance of pH in everyday life
2.4 More about Salts
2.4.1 Family of Salts
2.4.2 pH of Salts
2.4.3 Chemicals from Common Salt
2.4.4 Are the Crystals of Salts really dry?
Section 2.1 – In this section, you’ll study the chemical properties of acids and bases.
You’ll learn about certain indicators like ‘olfactory’ indicators (like onions, vanilla,
clove) that will help you decide whether a substance is acidic or basic in nature.
Section 2.2 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge about the common factors
between all acids and bases. You’ll also learn the reactions that take place in aqueous
solution.
Section 2.3 – In this section, you’ll learn how strong a given acid or a base is by using
the universal indicator – the pH scale. You’ll study about the presence of pH in living
organisms like humans, plants and animals, and also soil. You’ll even study some
naturally occurring acids like vinegar, tamarind, orange and tomato and test the pH
values of various solutions.
Section 2.4 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge about different kinds of salts,
preparations, properties and uses of salts, pH of salts and chemical formulae of various
salts. You will learn how to check the solubility of various salts in water and report the
observations. You’ll also study properties and uses of common salt, bleaching powder,
baking soda and washing powder.
In this chapter, you are provided with several activities and examples with their
solutions for a clear understanding of Acids, Bases and Salts. To know more about
NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Chemistry Chapter 2, you should explore the exercises mentioned in this chapter. You can also download the Acids, Bases and Salts Class 10 Solutions PDF, solved by our science experts.
