The GRE is the most widely accepted graduate admissions test worldwide and can help you to gain admission for postgraduate study in the USA and beyond. GRE stands for Graduate Record Examinations and was created by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Many universities around the world require GRE results as part of their admissions process for postgraduate students. The results help to identify strong candidates, best suited to the course. Unlike other graduate tests, the way in which universities use the results of the GRE vary enormously, with some universities using it as a admissions formality, whilst other institutions use it as an important selection factor.
The exam is computer-based and is designed to measure verbal reasoning, analytical writing and critical thinking skills. Costs involved with taking the GRE vary depending on the country you take it in but you can expect to pay around USD$205. There are extra charges for rescheduling tests, changing your test centre and other administration tasks.
The computer-based GRE General Test consists of six sections. The first section is always the analytical writing section involving separately timed issue and argument tasks. The next five sections consist of two verbal reasoning sections, two quantitative reasoning sections, and either an experimental or research section. These five sections may occur in any order. The experimental section does not count towards the final score but is not distinguished from the scored sections.
GRE General Test is a multistage test, where the examinee's performance on earlier sections determines the difficulty of subsequent sections. This format allows the examined person to freely move back and forth between questions within each section, and the testing software allows the user to "mark" questions within each section for later review if time remains. The entire testing procedure lasts about 3 hours 45 minutes. One-minute breaks are offered after each section and a 10-minute break after the third section.
Candidates who have appeared for their GRE exam should be aware that their GRE score is valid for a period of five years from the day of the exam. Candidates who have appeared for their GRE exam can access their GRE scores by logging into their GRE account using their credentials. Your official GRE test scores will be available in your account on the GRE website 10-15 days after your test date. They will be sent to the universities of your choice within three weeks of your test date. Once the results are out, you will receive an email from ETS that your official GRE result is available in your account.
