Hindustani music, also known as the north Indian classical music is popular traditional music, which was originated from the northern Indian subcontinent during 13th and 14th Century. Deeply rooted in history, this powerful music is believed to be influenced by ancient Vedic philosophy, Persian elements (to some extent) and other Hinduism musical traditions. The principle of Hindustani music includes 'tala' (rhythmic patterns), 'swara', 'sargam' and is based on the specific sequences of musical 'raga' (melodic modes) - 'Sa', 'Re', 'Ga', 'Ma' 'Pa', 'Dha' and 'Ni'.

Dhrupad, tarana, sadra and khayal are amongst the famous Hindustani musical composition (primary vocal forms), whereas ghazal, qawwali, thumri, dadra, dhamar, tappa, kajri and bhajans are amongst the semi-classical compositions. Sitar, tabla and shehnai are the prominent musical instruments used in Hindustani music.
