Ever wondered how statistics deal with traffic that you encounter every day while travelling?
Well, we model arrival of vehicles as Poisson distribution. For example, 10 vehicles arrive in the 1st hour, 14 vehicles arrive in the 2nd hour, 7 vehicles arrive in the 3rd hour and so on. So you can get the mean number of vehicles that will be the parameter for the Poisson distribution.
Now can we simulate the traffic arrival using this information? We know the formula for pmf of a Poisson distribution. So for every hour, we can get the flow of traffic.
This is how advanced traffic simulators work!
