A covalent bond is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. As carbon has four valence electron so, to complete its octet, it should have loose four electrons or gain 4 electrons, but due to its smaller size, it can't tolerate that much charge on it, that's carbon forms covalent bonds.
