High school students who are determined to pursue the Engineering profession use lot of their energy in securing good marks in their Board examinations. They also parallely attend preparatory classes at coaching centres for the entrance exams like the CET.
Very few perhaps know that in the first year / semester of the Engineering Degree/Diploma most subjects are common for the students of all the branches/discipline of Engineering. Whether, you have opted for Information Technology or Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering or any other stream of Engineering you have to study these common/ compulsory subjects in the first semester.
Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics/Chemistry, Fundamentals of Programming Languages, Engineering Graphics/Drawing are the subjects you have to study mandatorily.
Engineering Graphics-1 is a subject that requires practical/hands on experience to cope up with its demands. A number of students find it difficult to understand, some take it lightly and either score very low marks or simply fail in the subject called drawing.
Even the Polytechnic students pursuing their Diploma courses have to study the commom subjects in the first semester irrespective of the branch they have selected. The common subjects are: Basic Physics, Basic Chemistry, Basic Mathematics, English, Computer Fundamentals and Basic Workshop Practice.
My humble suggestion is that if the high school students attend a short/crash course on the Technical Drawing meant for high school students during their vacations they will find the subject much easier and will score good marks when they attend first semester of Engineering/Polytechnic.
Any good tutor can teach the basics of Technical Drawing in maximum 10 - 15 days.
The school authorities can also take the initiative of conducting full day Workshops on the subject on weekends. This small step will decrease the load in the first semester of engineering on the student.
