We can understand this with reference to glass house effect. Suppose there is a room which is not closed and is near fire and there is another glass room which is little farther from the fire compared to the open room. Now, heat is entering the open room more but also its getting escaped. However, what ever heat entering the glass room, its trapped. hence, the temperature of the glass room is much more than the open room even though the open room is closer. same is the story with Mercury and Venus. Even though Mercury is closer to Sun, it is not trapping the heat as it lacks Carbon di oxide in its atmosphere. On the other hand, Venus has higher percentage of Carbon di Oxide, therefore is trapping more heat and hence it is the hottest planet. Hope this answers your query. Regards Smita read less

Mercury's atmosphere does not have carbon dioxide (CO2) whereas Venus's atmosphere does. CO2 has a high tendency to absorb heat. So for Mercury, the heat is reutrned to space while for Venus the heat is absorbed, which raises its temperature, making it the hottest planet.
