Basically no real difference. In physics we use ionization energy and measure it in eV (Ionization potential is now replaced with ionization energy in Modren Physis), whereas in chemistry we make it molar quantity (kJ/mol or kcal/mol) then it is termed as Ionization Enthalpy or molar Ionization energ...

Can change coal into Diamond.

Ya,there is difference.Enthalpy is the energy per unit mole bt potential is only energy or work. Now u can understand wt is I.p. nd I.E.

No real difference. Ionization potential is the old name for ionization energy. However they are usually expressed in different units: - ionization energy is in units of joules or electron volts (eV) - ionization potential is in units of volts (. an ionisation potential of 5V means that 5eV of energy...

Generally when referred with respect to a single atom or molecule, it is called ionization energy. Units eV. Earlier it was measured in Volts so it was called ionization potential. When we measure for a mole it is called molar ionization enthalpy- units kJ/mol.

Ionization energy is amount of energy needed to remove an electron from valence shell of an isolated gases atom present in its ground state to form cation where as ionization potential is minimum energy required to remove an electron from neutral atom and it is maximum for noble gas.

Ionisation potential or ionizaton enrgy represent the minimum energy reqired toremvve an electron from gaseeous isolated atom . it is represented by I. ionization enthalpy is the change in enthalpy for the same process. it is represented by ^ H.

Wikipedia says they are synonymous. Ionization energy is how much energy it takes to abstract an electron from an atom. A molecule with a low ionization energy can more easily be ionized. Wikipedia says they are synonymous. Ionization energy is how much energy it takes to abstract an electron from an atom. A molecule with a low ionization energy can more easily be ionized. It seems weird to call this a low ionization potential though. You are trying to say it can easily be ionized, but you would call that a "low ionization potential"? That makes it sound like it ISN'T easy to ionize it. So, are they the same thing or are they opposites? Also, why does IE decrease down a group? The explanation given is that the electrons are further from the nucleus. But Z(effective) increases down a group. Who cares if they are further away if they are feeling more charge from the nucleus? read less
