Yes, but atleast 4hrs before yoga practice. Yoga practice is most effective when done with an empty stomach. But there is no harm if you want to have a small cup of tea/coffee or a glass of water half an hour before practice.

According to Sage Patanjali, Pranayama is defined as "Swasa Praswasa Gati Vichedah". That means, "controlling the flow of air/vital energy". This "control" though begins as a conscious process by prolonged practice becomes a natural state which may be termed Kevala Kumbhaka.

As per Vasishta Samhita, Hatha yoga includes yama, niyama, asana, pranayama and pratyahara. Dharana, dyan and samadhi are part of Raja yoga. In practice it is very difficult to attain Raja yoga without Hatha yoga- that is classical yoga of Exercises, Breathing, Relaxation and Disciplined life.
