Even if you join the Civil Services at 30, you have thirty years of service. Most likely you’ll retire in the rank of Additional Secretary to Government of India. This is just one rank below the highest level ie. of a Secretary. In the IFS, you’ll have served as Ambassador in one or more countries before you retire. If Civil Services fascinate you, it’s better to spend 30 years in a job you like rather than spending 40 years in a job you don’t like. So, 26 isn’t too late to start preparing for UPSC.
