All aspiring candidates for any of the NIFT programmes need to take up the Entrance Examination. It is an objective type questions carrying 1 mark for right answers and negative marking of 0.25 mark for each wrong answer. There are both PBT and CBT mode of test.
CAT (Creative Ability Test): The Creative Ability Test evaluates a candidate’s intuition skill, power of observation, and design ability. Another important aspect of the exam, it evaluates – creative and innovative use of colors and illustration skills.
GAT (General Ability Test) is common for all the NIFT programmes consist of the following sections:
1) Quantitative Ability
As the name suggests, the QA evaluates quantitative ability of candidates. It consists of questions on Percentage, Fractions, Multiplication, Rate of Interest, Distance, Ratio & Proportion, Work & Task and Addition.
2) Communication Ability
This sub section tests a candidate’s command over the English Language. It ask questions on antonyms, synonyms, singular & plural, words with corresponding meanings, one word substitutes, correct spellings, idioms and phrases and more.
3) English Comprehension
It tests a candidate’s ability to comprehend correctly the theme, message or meaning from a given passage.
4) Analytical and Logical Ability
The Analytical and Logical Ability is designed to test a candidate’s ability to infer and see logic from a given information and ability to identify the logic or reason involved in a particular problem and solving it by applying logic.
5) General Knowledge and Current Affairs
To check how updated the candidate is on current happenings around the world.
6) Case Study
This sub-test is based on a situation of an industry environment. It checks a candidate’s managerial skills.
Please note, candidates appearing for BFTECH, MFTECH and MFM only with have ‘Case Study’ in the GAT section.

Candidates who are short listed from the written entrance exam they require to undergo Situation test/Group Discussion (GD)/Interview as applicable (except B.FTECH).
Personal Interview
The personal interview section judges the various parametres listed below by a panel:
1) Career orientation
2) Aptness for the field
3) Overall personal achievements in academics and co-curricular activities
4) Communication
5) General awareness and aptitude, creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful
Group Discussions
Candidates shortlisted for Masters Programs from the written exam are required to undergo Case Study based Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). The GD will lasts 15-20 minutes on a Case Study, and the candidates will be assessed by a Panel on the following parametres:
1) Conceptual clarity
2) Knowledge of the topic assigned
3) Contribution made to the topic
4) Interpersonal skills
5) Ability to generate new ideas
