For improving vocabulary, the age-old method of reading a newspaper and taking 8 to 10 words out of it with its meaning and sentence usage won't be of much help unless and until your basic vocabulary is up to the mark. There's no point in just learning the new words without its real-life or practical application. So, my advice is to follow three primary methods to learn vocabulary. One of them is a highly effective root method.
