So true. I try and follow a different methodology. I try to identify people who are responsive to my comments/questions and try to build a rapport with them through interaction that I might have. What eventually starts happening is they in return start getting a sense of belongingness with the speaker. 1. Start identifying those them and start connecting with them through q&a etc. 2. Try to connect with them even after the speech/talk if possible. In interviews what you could also look at doing is asking for an informal feedback, what went well and what could have been improved.
