It depends on the chord progression you are playing over. If the chords are minor, then we have to play the minor scale and similarly for major. But that doesn't mean you can't choose a major scale over a minor. But if you are starting with soloing for the first time, apply this. E.g., For A minor chord, play A natural minor ( aeolian mode) or minor pentatonic scale. For A major, play A major scale (Ionian mode) or major pentatonic scale. I hope it helps.

Each major key uses a different set of notes (its major scale), just as it did in major scales, starting the minor scale pattern on a different note. A minor key is called the relative minor of the major key that has the same key.
