Punjabi Language and its Heritage:
Most people of India speak either Dravidian language or Indo-European languages. While the north Indians generally speak the Indo-European language, the Southern parts of India speak and understand the Dravidians language.
Among the twenty-two official languages of India, Punjabi is one of the most popular ones. In India above 100 million people speak this language worldwide and cherish its cultural heritage. Types of Punjabi Languages and Dialects -
There are lots of Punjabi dialects which can be found in various corners of the state. A significant portion of Punjab is situated in Pakistan, and their dialects vary a lot from the rest of Indian Punjab.
However, broadly, the Punjabi language is divided according to regions. In the eastern and central Punjab, Standard Punjabi i.e. the most common Punjabi language is spoken; in the southwest, most people talk Saraiki; in the northwest, Hindko is the most popular language; Pahari-Pothwari is famous in North Punjab.
Alphabets of Punjabi Language -
Most of the alphabets of Asia are said to be descendants of the Aramaic alphabet. This is said to have evolved from Phoenician in the 7th century B.C during the Persian Empire.
It is believed that Brahmi is derived from Phoenician or Aramaic alphabets. However, many of the language specialists have argued that there is a link between this language and the Harappan or Indus alphabets which goes back to 2000 B.C.
The Brahmi language replaced that language under the influence of various local languages and alphabets during the Gupta dynasty.
Gurmukhi Alphabet -
To learn the Punjabi language it is necessary to have a proper understanding of the alphabets. The Gurmukhi Alphabet has been found from the holy book Guru Granth Sahib. This language is derived from the Landa alphabet, which roots back in the Brahmi alphabets.
