What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is everything a company does to market their products and services to customers and prospects using digital technologies. All marketing activities that take place in the digital realm and involve digital media is known as digital marketing.

Types of digital marketing


1) Search Engine Optimization (SEO) It is a process of optimising the website to rank higher on organic search engine result pages (SERPs) and thus increasing the amount of organic traffic of the site by incorporating search engine friendly elements. Two primary areas of Search engine optimisation include:
  • On-page optimisation - Website elements which comprise a web page, such as HTML code, textual content, and images.
  • Off-page optimisation - Predominantly, refers to backlinks - links pointing to the site which is being optimised, from other relevant websites.

2) Content Marketing Content is very essential to start digital marketing on the internet. To post on social media platforms, website/blog, in email marketing and advertisements on search engines a high-quality content is needed. Quality content is the most critical factor in determining the success of SEO. Content marketing can be done through the following: Blog posts. Ebooks and whitepapers. Infographics. Online brochures and lookbooks.

3) Social Media Marketing (SMM) Social Media Marketing uses social networking sites as a tool for promoting websites, thus increasing traffic towards them and learning from users' direct reactions. The primary goal of SMM is to improve communication with users, increase brand visibility and reach more customers. SMM is based on the organic search, which basically means that when the website or its connected social network page is more active, the websites' position on search engines rises, i.e. it will be in seen in the first few search results. Social media marketing can be done through:
  • Facebook.
  • Twitter.
  • LinkedIn.
  • Instagram.
  • Snapchat.
  • Pinterest.
  • Google+.

4) Pay-Per-Click (PPC) PPC is a technique of driving traffic to the website by paying a publisher every time the ad is being clicked. Most common type of PPC is Google AdWords. It allows you to pay for top slots on Google's search engine results pages at a price "per click" of the links you place. Other channels where you can use PPC include:
  • Paid ads on Facebook.
  • Promoted Tweets on Twitter.
  • Sponsored Messages on LinkedIn.

5) Email Marketing Email is the most effective way to reach out to individual customers and prospects. Building an email list and sending newsletters is the way businesses keep in touch with their audiences. It is the most popular digital marketing tactic. Email is used to promote content, discounts and events, as well as to direct people toward the business's website. The types of emails in an email marketing campaign include:
  • Blog subscription newsletters.
  • Follow-up emails to website visitors who downloaded something.
  • Customer welcome emails.
  • Holiday promotions to loyalty program members.
  • Tips or similar series emails for customer nurturing.
