In this chapter, you’ll study different types of curves such as circles, ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas and their properties. These curves have a special name, called conic sections or just conics because they all can be obtained by slicing through a cone. Yes, it is interesting to know that these conic sections are obtained by the intersection of a plane with a double-napped right circular cone. An in-depth study of these conic shapes is very helpful in manufacturing automobile headlights, planetary motions, architectural engineering, constructing roller coasters, manufacturing bicycles, rotation of planets in the solar system, nuclear cooling towers, Ferris wheel, magnifying glass, navigation systems, designing antennas or telescope, reflectors in flashlights and much more. We find these conic sections everywhere!
11.1 Introduction
11.2 Sections of a Cone
11.3 Circle
11.4 Parabola
11.5 Ellipse
11.6 Hyperbola
Section 11.2 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge on different sections of a cone and related concepts such as vertex, axis, generator of a cone and degenerated conic sections. You’ll also learn how a cone can be converted into a circle, ellipse, parabola and hyperbola.
Section 11.3 – In this section, you’ll learn what a circle is and related concepts such as the centre of a circle, radius and equation of a circle.
Section 11.4 – In this section, you’ll study what is a parabola, and related concepts such as directrix and axis of a parabola, focus, degenerate case of parabola, standard equations and latus rectum of a parabola.
Section 11.5 – In this section, you’ll learn what an ellipse is and the related concepts – the foci, centre, vertices, major axis and minor axis of an ellipse. You’ll also study about the relationship between semi-major axis, semi-minor axis and the distance of the focus from the centre of the ellipse, special cases, eccentricity, standard equations and latus rectum of an ellipse.
Section 11.6 – In this section, you’ll study what a hyperbola is and related concepts like difference, foci of hyperbola, the transverse axis, centre, vertices, eccentricity, standard equation, equilateral hyperbola, Latus rectum and various observations of a hyperbola.
In this chapter, you are provided with several diagrams and examples along with their solutions for a clear understanding of Conic Sections.
