Permutations and combinations are one of the most important and interesting topics in mathematics. It shows a way to count different possible arrangements that can be formed from a specific group of items. However, many times you tend to get confused between these two terms and use them interchangeably. However, these two terms are different from each other. Permutation means different arrangements of a given number of elements considered one by one or a few of them or all together at a time. For instance, if we have two elements C and D, then according to permutation, there are two possible arrangements – CD and DC. So, in permutation, the order matters a lot.
Combinations are those arrangements where the order is not considered. It means the number of permutations is always more than the number of combinations. For instance, if there are two elements C and D, in combination there is just one possible arrangement, that is to select both of them.
Permutations and combinations have many real-life applications, such as while tossing a coin, playing board games, selecting players for the sport’s team, assigning phone numbers, selecting nominees for student council, lottery numbers and more.
