In this chapter, you’ll study statistics and different techniques used in statistics to derive required information based on certain observations. What is statistics all about? Statistics is the science or discipline of collecting, organising, analysing and presenting numerical data in huge quantities, in order to draw conclusions. For instance, finding the average height of students in a class or finding the average GDP of a country – all these are derived from statistics. Statistics is widely used especially in the government sector; in fields such as education, business, science, medicine, education, demography and more.
In this chapter, you’ll study various measures of statistics such as a measure of dispersion, range, mean deviation, standard deviation, frequency distribution and more.
15.1 Introduction
15.2 Measures of Dispersion
15.3 Range
15.4 Mean Deviation
15.5 Variance and Standard Deviation
15.6 Analysis of Frequency Distributions
Section 15.2 – In this section, you’ll learn about various measures of dispersion such as range, quartile deviation, mean deviation and standard deviation. These measures of dispersion are based on the observations made and types of the measure of central tendency used.
Section 15.3 – In this section, you will study what ‘range’ is and how to calculate it. A range shows the difference between the maximum and minimum values in a series.
Section 15.4 – In this section, you’ll learn the meaning and techniques to calculate mean deviation for ungrouped as well as for grouped data. You’ll also study some limitations of mean deviation.
Section 15.5 – In this section, you’ll learn what Standard Deviation is and how to calculate the standard deviation of a discrete frequency distribution, the standard deviation of continuous frequency distribution and shortcut method to find variance and standard deviation.
Section 15.6 – In this section, you’ll learn to analyse the frequency distribution. You’ll also learn the technique of comparing two frequency distributions with the same mean.
In this chapter, you are provided with several formulas and examples along with their solutions for a clear understanding of Statistics.
