Section 9.2 – This section deals with the recording of data. Data can be collected from different sources. If the teacher of a class wants to know the number of bananas required for the class, she has to read the names in the list one by one and count the total number of bananas required. To know the number of apples, guavas and oranges separately she has to repeat the same process for each of these fruits. How tedious and time-consuming it is! It might become more tedious if the list has, say, 50 students. To get rid of this situation this section will help you in recording data.
Section 9.3 – In this section, you will study how to organize data. Data can be organized in a tabular form where each row represents the category in data and each column represents the frequency. To get particular information from the given data quickly, the data can be arranged in a tabular form using tally marks. This type of symmetrical arrangement is very efficient in representing and organizing data so that it can be understood easily.
Section 9.4 – Now you will study how to plot data in the form of a graph. This section will teach you pictograph. A pictograph represents data through pictures of objects. It helps answer the questions on the data at a glance. Pictographs are often used by dailies and magazines to attract readers attention. It is basically a pictorial representation of the data in a more organized way.
Section 9.5 – This section deals with the interpretation of a pictograph. As you move further in this section you will learn different ways in which a pictograph can be interpreted. It can calculate the highest scorer of a class, the strength of boys and girls in a class, the number of candies each student is having, the number of fruit baskets carrying oranges and many more.
Section 9.6 – You already know how to interpret a pictograph. Now you will study how to draw a pictograph. This section contains a number of examples to teach you the concept behind plotting of a pictograph. This can be performed on a regular sheet of paper or on a graph paper.
Section 9.7 – Towards the end of this chapter, you will study bar graph, its implementation and how to draw a bar graph. In a bar graph, bars of uniform width is drawn horizontally or vertically with equal spacing between them. The length of each bar gives the required information. The scale of the graph must be chosen wisely for better accuracy in the graphical representation. For example, 1 unit = 100 students. As you move further in this section you will come to know how to read a bar graph, what conclusions can be taken from a bar graph and in which areas it can be implemented.
