We see a number of shapes with which we are familiar. We also make a lot of pictures. These pictures include different shapes. We have learnt about some of these shapes in earlier chapters as well. In this chapter, we shall learn to make these shapes.
In NCERT Maths Book Class 6, Chapter 14 Solutions, as you progress through the chapter you will learn practical geometry. At first, you will study the construction of a circle, a line segment using the given length or by using the copy of a given line segment. Further, you will study the concept of perpendiculars and perpendicular bisectors. Towards the end of this chapter, you will see some techniques that will help you in making angles more accurately and efficiently.
14.1 Introduction
14.2 The Circle
14.2.1 Construction of a circle when its radius is known
14.3 A-Line Segment
14.3.1 Construction of a line segment of a given length
14.3.2 Constructing a copy of a given line segment
14.4 Perpendiculars
14.4.1 Perpendicular to a line through a point on it
14.4.2 Perpendicular to a line through a point not on it
14.4.3 The perpendicular bisector of a line segment
14.5 Angles
14.5.1 Constructing an angle of a given measure
14.5.2 Constructing a copy of an angle of unknown measure
14.5.3 Bisector of an angle
14.5.4 Angles of special measures
Section 14.2 – In this section, you will study the construction of a circle when the radius is given. Suppose we want to draw a circle of radius 3 cm. We need to use our compasses. Open the compasses for the required radius of 3cm. Mark a point with a sharp pencil where we want the centre of the circle to be. Name it as A. Place the pointer of the compasses on O. Turn the compasses slowly to draw the circle. Be careful to complete the movement, around in one instant.
Section 14.3 – This section deals with the construction of a line segment. It can be constructed with the help of a given length or by constructing a copy of the given line segment. Suppose we want to draw a line segment of length 4.7 cm. Draw a line l. Mark a point A on a line l. Place the compass pointer on the ‘zero mark’ of the ruler. Open it to place the pencil point up to the 4.7cm mark. Taking caution that the opening of the compass has not changed, place the pointer on A and swing an arc to cut l at B. AB is a line segment of the required length. As you move further in this section you will see the technique of copying a line segment.
Section 14.4 – Now you will study perpendiculars. It can be drawn to a line through a point on it, to a line through a point not on it or the perpendicular bisector of a line segment. To make a perpendicular bisector of a line segment take a compass. Measure more than half of the line segment on the compass and make an arc above the line segment. Make another arc by placing the compass on the other end of the line segment. Now make the same two arcs below the line segment. Now join the intersecting points of the arcs. You will get the perpendicular bisector of the line segment.
Section 14.5 – Towards the end of this chapter, you will study angles. Angles can be made easily, with the help of protractors and compasses. To construct an angle of the given measure we can either take the help of a protractor or we can use the angular bisector technique of the compasses. To bisect an angle means to make half of a previously drawn angle. There are some angles of special measures which can be drawn with compasses very easily. They are 90, 45, 60, 30, 120, 135.
