This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form. Students will learn the basic techniques, postures, hand gestures, footwork, and expressions essential to Bharatanatyam. The course will also provide an overview of the historical and cultural context of Bharatanatyam, helping students appreciate the art form more deeply.
Introduction to Bharatanatyam
- Understanding the historical and cultural context of Bharatanatyam
- Overview of the key elements: Natya (drama), Nritta (pure dance), and Nritya (expression)
- Introduction to the basic hand gestures (Mudras) and their meanings
Adavus (Basic Steps)
- Learning the foundational steps and movements (Adavus) in Bharatanatyam
- Focus on posture, alignment, and balance
- Practice combining few basic movements on rhythm
Abhinaya (Expression)
- Introduction to facial expressions (Abhinaya) and their importance in Bharatanatyam
- Learning to convey emotions through facial expressions
- Incorporating hand gestures and facial expressions into simple dance sequences and stories
Rhythm and Talam
- Introdution to the tala system of Carnatic Music
- Understanding the basic 7 tala-s (Sapta talas)
- Learn construction of a Rhythmic pattern
Assessment
- Weekly practice and participation
- Interesting assignments to help apply the learning practically
Materials Needed:
- Comfortable dance attire (traditional Indian dance costume if available)
