Brief definitions for the following words:
- Music, Dhwani (Sound), Naad, Swara, Shuddha Swara, Vikrut Swara (Komal, Teevra), Varjya Swara, Saptak, Mel/Thaat, Alankar (Palta), Raag, Jaati [{Odav (A raag which uses only 5 notes), Shadav (A raag which uses 6 notes)}, Sampoorn (A raag that uses all seven notes)}] ; Vaadi (Root Note) ; Samvadi (The second most prominent note of a Raag), Pakad (A phrase of note combinations usually no more than five notes in length that when played represents the flow or character of the raaga), Alap (Improvised melodic structures that introduces and develops a Raaga), Taan (To improvise and to expand weaving together the notes in a fast tempo), Swarmalika (Rhythmic composition of the notes in the raaga) [Sargam (A acronym created by combining the first 4 syllables of Sa Re Ga Ma I Geet (Song)], Lakshan Geet (A composition where all important features of a Raaga are sung like a poem), Sthayi (First stanza of a composition in a Raaga), Antara (Second stanza of a musical composition in a Raaga), Laya (Speed or tempo at which the rhythm is played) [Vilambit (Slow), Madhya (Medium), Drut (Fast)], Matra (The number of beats in a Taal), Taal (Regular rhythmic pattern of equally placed beats of a composition), Vibhag (The number of partitions that a Taal is divided into, eg 4-4-4-4, 2-3-2-3, etc.), Sam (The first beat of a time cycle or Taal), Khali (A beat played with a dampened or closed sound), Dugun (When two syllables/Swaras are sung for one beat), Theka (Particular bol that make up a given Taal), Varjit/Varjya Swar (A note which is excluded from a Raga),Avartan (Completion of one cycle of a Taal)
Yaman, Kaafi, Khamaj, Bhimpalasi, Bageshri, Bhoopali, Des, Durga
- Knowledge of Aaroh - Avroh, Pakad as well as Prarambhik Alap / Swar Vistar for each of the above raags.
- A geet (song) as well as a gat (refers to a fixed composition) in Madhya Lay for every raag.
- Performance of at least 5 mins including Bandish/Gat, Alap/Swar Vistar, Taan or Bol Taan or Gat Tod
- One Composition in Jhap taal or Rupak or Ek taal composition
- Two sargam geet
- Two lakshan geet
- One dhrupad (along with dugun laya);
- One bhajan

Singing/Playing the five simple Alankars (in Vilambit and Madhya Laya) of the following Shuddha swaras and also use every alankar in any one of the raags in the syllabus.

Ability to sing/play and recognize the seven pure notes.
Ability to sing/play Komal and Teevra Swaras and recognize them with the help of the notes of a raag.
Singing/Playing the national songs ‘Vande Maataram’ and ‘Jana Gana Mana’ is compulsory.
