Can the percent s and p character in a hybrid orbital be measured experimentally?

It's important to realize that hybridization is part of the valence bond theory. It is not something that is directly observed in an experiment. You can explain a structure measured experimentally using hybridization, but you can't directly measure hybridization. Check more details in Bent's Rule, the... ...more
It's important to realize that hybridization is part of the valence bond theory. It is not something that is directly observed in an experiment. You can explain a structure measured experimentally using hybridization, but you can't directly measure hybridization. Check more details in Bent's Rule, the above argument can be applied to any structure with a central atom and 2 or more substituents. The key is that concentrating atomic s character in orbitals directed towards electropositive substituents is more favorable than removing s character from orbitals directed towards electronegative substituents.
