At junior consultant level you wouldn't require any coding /programming skills
As you grow with 3-5 years or more experience you are expected to write Functional specs to understand the gaps and customize the solution as per Business requirement
A consultant would have to understand the RICEFW objects - You don't have to have coding skills but how ABAP knowledge with regard to different objects and their logic will translate to Business process execution is essential for example what the suitable User Exit/ screen exit/ what is ALV grid for report making/ what is a suitable BAPI for Document posting in upload program or BADI for structure enhancement and a suitable Adobe form for output management etc
It is not so difficult if you logically think and start accumulating the basic knowledge to debug yourself which will definitely reduces the dependency of any functional consultant
