Building fluency in reading English

Anupama C.

1. Read a book / newspaper aloud everyday. Record your voice when you read. Listen to how you sound.

2. Some words might have been difficult for you to pronounce while reading. Find out their pronunciation on any online dictionary and play the pronunciation till you understand it.

3. Read the paragraph again. This time pay attention to the pauses you take while reading. Short pause for wherever there is a comma and a long pause after a fullstop. Also take pauses wherever it feels natural to you.

4. To understand how to take pauses while reading, watch English news channels - BBC, CNN, Aljazeera. The more you listen and watch these channels the better will be your chances of picking up the correct way of reading.
