I think that we (at least in the USA) no longer have the necessary level of education or the attention spans to really listen to ‘classical’ music, or jazz either. That said, there is SO MUCH music out there that is essentially unheard that the idea of ‘underrated’ is a little meaningless. For what it’s worth, here are two out of the thousands of works in the repertoire that I personally enjoy and aren't well-known:
‘Isle of the Dead’ by Rachmaninov. It’s a dark, atmospheric piece, mostly in 5.
‘Serenade for Horn, Tenor, and Strings’ by Britten. Beautiful settings of English poetry, with a cool horn obbligato.
