 Yes, you can do research in Physics from home specially in theoretical physics and Experimental physics are also two types one is hardware or laboratory and the other is software. For example, world largest experiment which is located at CERN. So there are two types of work one is creating hardware or detector and another is analysing the data which comes from the experiment. If you do analysing then you can do it from anywhere or home. What if you want to do in hardware or creating the part of experiment. Or laboratory experiments. Then you have to go there.
