There are 2 way to do research in Physics: Theoretical and Experimental. If you are doing purely theoretical research such as Quantum field theory, mathematical modelling (DFT simulations), or Astrophysics, etc., you do can always work from home. However, most of the other research fields need to be verified by experiments and hence cannot be done from home.
