Cognition involves the interplay of the following elements in a broader sense.
1. Attention 2. Memory 3. Perception 4. Language.
1. To learn all these elements have to kick in. You have to be attentive to the surrounding stimuli for improving cognition. If you don't attend to the stimuli, the perception will be affected.
2. Memorizing the stimulus, their interplay and aftereffects for associating with each other influence cognition. If you fail to memorise, the association between cause and effect is not formed. Learning and thinking are not without knowledge.
3. Perception, of the stimulus in the right perspective, is essential for right-leaning and proper thinking. The variants of experiments should be exact in observing cause and effect. Thoughts are moulded and evoked depending upon the perception. If perception is a threat, defensive or aggressive feelings are evoked, if understanding is a pity, different kinds of thought will rise. Thoughts further shame learning and cognition. Here it is essential to the differential between perception and sensation.
4. Language again plays a crucial role in cognition. Perception, reception of stimuli and communications are its components. Language affects perception, memorizing and attention.
The elements influencing the cognition, as mentioned above, are not exhaustive. There are many other individual factors like creativity, emotions, stress, biological status etc. that affect perception.
To improve cognition, all the factors are to be developed. Improve attention, alertness. Improve your listening skills, analysis and perception. Memory should be sharp, which could be done through repeated practice. Creative thinking, social learning and involvement in the topic also helps in improving cognition.

There are a few critical ingredients to improve cognitive thinking. Only if all of these work together does a transformation happen.
1. Create enough space in your thinking process - make it slow enough that you can change it. Meditation, having a good sleep, keeping a healthy body with regular exercise are by far the best ways to do it.
2. Ingest relevant knowledge - read books about decision making, intuition (Thinking fast and slow), do abstract mathematics courses and anything pertinent to the skill you want to develop
3. Practice. Take a concept that you have learnt and apply it to your everyday problem. This step by far would be the make or break step. In case you feel it's hard to practice at first, apply your newly gained thinking skills to simple problems.
One thing specifically to improve cognitive thinking has to be writing. If you write down the problem, you're about to solve, and your thoughts, ideas, solutions, for that problem - it gives you a tremendous amount of clarity as to how your thought process is working. It gives you a chance to understand your thought process, correct it, and develop better cognitive habits.
