Jhinook Mukherjee Sinha for advance level training since last year.Before that I have completed my 5th year in Bharatnatyam under the guidence of Smt. Sujata Ballav Guin. "Learning Bharatanatyam in this institution is a sham! The teacher is not aware of even the basics of the dance form and is incompetent to take classes of any sort. She is a beginner in dance, and I can vouch that she has no formal training under Dr. Guru Smt. Thankamani Kutty. She had recently started learning under the tutelage of my guru, the very accomplished Smt. Jhinook Mukherjee Sinha but is blindly reproducing her classes without any expertise or deep understanding of the dance. This is highly unethical, and it's embarrassing to see what some people are eager to do just for some publicity. "

It depends to what extent you want to learn it. You can be a great kathak dancer even after learning it for four or five years, and you can still lack some dancing skills even after learning it for ten or twelve years.
Professionally it's a nine-year course :
- Prathmik Pariksha
- First-year
- Second-year ( junior diploma)
- Third-year
- Fourth-year (senior diploma)
- Fifth-year
- Sixth year ( Prabhakar- it's a kind of degree)
- Seventh year
- Eighth year (masters)
- You can stop giving exams at any year.
Most people give the exams till the sixth year because the degree signifies that the person holding it has learnt enough to teach other people.
But learning kathak is more about enjoying it and connecting with it. It's a soul-satisfying dance.
If you want to master in this classical form, you need to practice more and more.

If you want to take professional training and exams, it takes nine years, but otherwise, it is a vast dance form. You can go on learning new pieces for whatsoever amount of time. Unlike Bharatnatyam which has seven years of official training, Kathak doesn't have any official period to have known the dance form thoroughly.
