I would always associate objects with shapes. As many as possible.
Also with colours, I would identify them with objects.
Also, a good idea to teach colours to a kid is to give them commands like...

First I try yo find out which food or combination of food is causing the allergy. If I fail to infer, I go to a doctor who would help me along with some tests if needed. After I know the cause, I would simply abstain from the cause or take certain anti allergy drug in case having the food is essential.
