Teaching Experience in detail in Self Defence classes
I am a 2nd DAN Black Belt having an experience of teaching Karate personally to the pupils of different ages starting from 4 yrs old baby to 59 yrs old person. I am also associated with couple of dojos(Karate training center) along with my own dojo. In the current scenario of society Karate has become more popular as a self defense tool. However with my experience and knowledge of Karate, I believe Karate's objective and scope is not limited to a mere self defense tool which helps to defend yourself along with others with bare hands but it has great moral values too like patience, respect, humility, tolerance, discipline, dynamism, self confidence, perseverance, integrity & mental toughness.

Both are effective in their way. It's upon the practitioner. However, there is a fundamental difference between these two forms of martial art. Taekwondo mostly emphasises on leg techniques whereas Karate emphasises on using all the body parts. So technically in a distanced fight, where you have more space, taekwondo will be more effective as kicks reach more than any of the body parts. But in close combats with limited space, Karate is more useful.

Usually, it takes around 5 yrs, depending on your progress. As you have mentioned your age, I expect a 23 yr old guy should understand the instructions quickly and perform better. So you can expect to get your black belt before the 5 yrs mark. But for any martial art, the actual progress should reflect by your performance only. No matter what coloured piece of cloth, you are using to tie your uniform.
