Matrix is a rectangular collection of numbers (usually real numbers), symbols or even
expressions arranged in the form of rows and columns. For example, a matrix having a
dimension of 2×3 has two rows and three columns. Matrix is an important tool in
Mathematics, as it simplifies work and therefore an in-depth knowledge of this tool, is
crucial in several areas. Matrices have wide applications and come very handy in the
fields of electronic spreadsheets, economics, genetics, management, sales and cost
projection, quantum mechanics and optics, coding, robotics and automation, etc.

Section 3.2 – In this section, you’ll study what matrix is all about and how numbers are
arranged in the form of rows and columns in a matrix. You’ll also learn the order of
matrix.
Section 3.3 – In this section, you’ll learn about different types of matrices such as row
matrix, column matrix, square matrix, diagonal matrix, scalar matrix, identity matrix,
zero matrix.
Section 3.4 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge about various operations on
matrices such as addition, multiplication of a matrix by a scalar and difference of
matrices, properties of matrix addition and multiplication.
Section 3.5 – Here, you’ll learn what transpose of a matrix is and special types of
matrices such as symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices, properties of the transpose of
matrices.
Section 3.6 – This section explains symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices in detail
and also proves a few theorems.
Section 3.7 – In this section, you’ll get exposure about six elementary operations or
transformations on a matrix (three related to rows and three related to columns).
Section 3.8 – In this section, you’ll study Invertible Matrices, (Uniqueness of inverse)
Inverse of a square matrix and Inverse of a matrix by elementary operations.
