Living beings or things have many characteristic features, but some of them are defining too. It means that some features such as an increase in size, reproduction, locomotion etc. are undoubtedly characteristic features of living being. But can be found either occurring artificially or it may be possible that certain living things don't show these characteristics. So, there are some features too that are defining, means these defining characters are only to be found in living organisms, like - Response to stimuli or consciousness is one of such defining feature. (You can refer to class 111th NCERT of Biology, chap-1)
Another aspect of ur question is - Living things and non-living things are made up of specific micro as well as macro-molecules (biomolecules) but point of difference is that in living things it is the proper arrangement or we can say adequate amount of these molecules interacting with each other in co-ordination within an environment (maybe cellular) that gives rise to life, and those having these processes called as living things or beings. Whereas in non living materials, this is not the case.
