There are four main Stress hormones; Cortisol, Cortisone, Epinephrine and Norepinephrine. Cortisol and Cortisone are released by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex within the adrenal gland. They are released due to low blood-glucose concentration and stress. Adrenaline or Epinephrine is released due to your body going through a highly tense situation. This is going to be quite a long answer, but I'll try and keep it short and to the point. In the modern environment one is exposed to various stressful conditions. Stress can lead to changes in the serum level of many hormones including glucocorticoids, catecholamines, growth hormone and prolactin. Some of these changes are necessary for the fight or flight response to protect oneself. Some of these stressful responses can lead to endocrine disorders like Graves’ disease, gonadal dysfunction, psychosexual dwarfism and obesity. Stress can also alter the clinical status of many preexisting endocrine disorders such as precipitation of adrenal crisis and thyroid storm. ‘Stress’ may be defined as any situation which tends to disturb the equilibrium between a living organism and its environment. In day-to-day life there are many stressful situations such as stress of work pressure, examinations, psychosocial stress and physical stresses due to trauma, surgery and various medical disorders. In response to stress, the level of various hormones changes. Reactions to stress are associated with enhanced secretion of a number of hormones including glucocorticoids, catecholamines, growth hormone and prolactin, the effect of which is to increase mobilization of energy sources and adapt the individual to its new circumstance. In today's competitive modern world one encounters stress in various aspects of life. As an adaptive response to stress, there is a change in the serum level of various hormones including CRH, cortisol, catecholamines and thyroid hormone. These changes may be required for the fight or flight response of the individual to stress. However, long-term exposure to stress may lead to many deleterious consequences leading to various endocrine disorders. Also, stress leads to change in the clinical course or status of many endocrine conditions. That's the basic gist of it without going into too much detail, which would take a lot of time and a lot of medical terms and explanations, which is not so relevant when all you want to know is how to manage it. Well, the best way to manage it is through deep breathing, whenever you're under stress, just take 5-10 deep breaths, this will activate your parasympathetic nervous system and help you calm down. Next thing you can do is to avoid people and things that induce stress in you. Another thing is to give yourself some alone time doing what you like to do and what relaxes you. Finally, do some stress relief activities like; Tai Chi, Yoga and taking a walk in the early morning, possibly at a beach while breathing and relaxing your whole body. There have also been cases, where listening to ocean waves, helped individuals relax. You can find ocean sounds anywhere on the internet, most are 5hrs+ long. Just close your eyes, lie down and listen to them while thinking of something pleasing, you'll fall asleep and wake up fresh as ever. So, that's about it. Hope I helped :) read less
