IELTS Speaking Part 1 Ten Things to Remember by Arun Anand IELTS Trainer Trivandrum

The first part of the IELTS speaking test is called the warm up session. As soon as the examiner has introduced himself/herself and verified your identity the first part of the test begins. It is very important that you do pretty well in each part of the speaking test not just in one or two.Another thing you have to remember is that the speaking test is designed such a way that it becomes harder and harder as you get on with it.In the first part of the speaking test the examiner wants to see how fluent you are in conversing in English. Here I provide ten things you need to be aware of to succeed in part one and move on

.Before you sit the exam practice answering questions about your work, studies, house and hometown

.There is always a chance that the examiner might ask you an unanticipated question so you need to be prepared for that. For example, the examiner might ask you what the meaning of your name is or whether you would like to change your name in the future. Before you sit the exam you may get someone to ask you such questions which normally do not pop up and see how you fare.

.You are not expected to come up with long answers in part one.The responses can be short, from three to four sentences.

.Don't use cliched or memorised answers. They have to sound natural. If the examiners thinks that you are using an answer you learnt by heart he might go for an unanticipated question next and surprise you.

.You need not put on a fake accent. The examiner knows that you are not a native speaker. What matters is whether the examiner can follow what you are saying or not.

.It is really important that you speak loudly enough.Don't make the examiner ask you to speak louder several times.Your perfomance is being recorded so you would want to speak a bit louder than you nomally do.

.Maintain eye contact with the examiner as you speak.Don't look away or down as you answer the question.

.There is no right or wrong answer to any question. If you can't think of what else to say in response to a question, remember the code-A-R-E-A which stands for answer-reason-example-answer

.Mindful of the grammar of your answers. The grammar of your sentences has to be accurate. You can expect the examiner to ask you questions demanding the use of present, past and future tense.

.The most important tip of all is Practice.Practise speaking English as much as possible.
