The IELTS task 1 comprises of writing an answer for 150 words. You should ideally spend only 20 minutes on this task. For academic students, a bar chart, graphs, pie chart and diagrams will be given. In the case of general students, letter writing will be provided.
Here's how you need to break it down into:
Introduction: Give a brief explanation about what the chart or diagram is about. The main body: Explain in detail the key points that you find in the chart/ diagram. Conclude your essay by offering your thoughts about the topic. When concluding your essay, give a brief overview of what you just said and what you felt was necessary.
Your scores will be assessed based on these criteria.
Vocabulary: A wide range of vocabulary is key to help you outstand from the rest of the test takers. However, make sure you do not overuse them. The trick is to choose words in the right context. Please do not use them every time you get a chance to show off your vocabulary.
Coherence and cohesion: Organise your thoughts according to the answer. Link them in the right context. Make sure to compose a structured paragraph. Give examples.
Task achievement: This is where the examiner checks how accurate your answer is to the question. Understand what the chart means and spot all the essential features. Be clear and concise with your response. Avoid giving opinions.
